Droitwich is situated in Worcestershire and nearby areas include Ombersley, Feckenham, Himbleton, Tibberton, Oddingley and Wychbold..

The area has some rural residencies, and the area is home to a large number of elderly care homes. This means that there are many people who cannot easily visit town centre chiropodists and podiatrists clinics in Droitwich, as public transport is often infrequent and will only cater for certain areas.

In fact, there are even those who live within Droitwich, who cannot physically make the short distance to a podiatry or chiropody clinic in a town centre. Reasons for this may be that the patient is unwell, or it is uncomfortable for them to walk to a bus stop, or from a car park to the clinic itself. For others, the prospect of taking time out of the day to visit a chiropody clinic can be a little daunting and they would much prefer chiropody treatment to be carried out within the comfort of their own home.

Area covered

Bromsgrove district is a large borough making up much of North Worcestershire.

The area borders southern suburbs of Birmingham such as Rubery and the district’s main towns include Alvechurch, Aston Fields, Belbroughton, Bromsgrove (town), Catshill, Clent, Hagley, Rubery, Stoke Prior and Wythall.

Bromsgrove district has many rural and country residencies, and the borough is home to a large number of elderly care homes. This means that there are many people who cannot easily visit town centre chiropodists and podiatrists clinics in Bromsgrove and Hagley as public transport is often infrequent and will only cater for certain areas.

In fact, there are even those who live within towns such as Bromsgrove, and Hagley, who cannot physically make the short distance to a podiatry clinic in a town centre.

Chiropodist Treatments Offered

The Health Professions Council (HPC) was set up in the UK to protect the public who require advice and treatment from health professionals.

The HPC is a regulator and they keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards for their training, skills, behaviour and health in whichever area of medicine or health care they may practice in.

They currently regulate 15 health professions: arts therapists, biomedical scientists, chiropodists / podiatrists, clinical scientists, dietitians, hearing aid dispensers, occupational therapists, operating department practitioners, orthoptists, paramedics, physiotherapists, practitioner psychologists, prosthetists / orthotists, radiographers, and speech and language therapists.

All of these professions have at least one professional title which is protected by law, which means that anyone using these titles must be registered with the HPC. It is a criminal offence for someone to claim they are registered with the HPC when they are not, and they may be prosecuted by the HPC if this happens.

Societies and Clubs

look out for these signs

Many health professions will have an additional society which a health professional may be a member of, in Podiatry and Chiropody this is the Society of Chiropodist and Podiatrists.

Those wishing to join the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists are required to be HPC registered in the first place. This is to ensure all professionals are already vetted and are qualified to work under the title of Podiatrist or Chiropodist in the UK.

To check whether a Podiatrist or Chiropodist (or other health professional) is registered with the HPC, you can ask for their registered number and search for them online here: http://www.hpc-uk.org/

If you have any doubts about your health professional, it’s always worth checking.

All Podiatrists will have a story which can be told about how they became interested in the profession of Podiatry and Chiropody.

In this post, as the Podiatrist for Lilypad Podiatry, I explain a little about my background and what sparked my interest in Podiatry through a specialist subject close to my heart.

I enjoyed a general interest in Podiatry and Ballet from school age, and after gaining entry onto a Podiatry degree course at Southampton University in 1999, I later qualified as a HPC registered Podiatrist in August 2002.

During my final year at University I completed a research paper, which was later published with the help of a co-author in the British Journal of Podiatry titled, ‘Foot Problems in Ballet Dancers, a Dancers’ perspective.’

This involved interviewing a focus group of ballet dancers from the English National Ballet and completing a qualitative research paper discussing dancers’ perspectives on ballet foot injuries, and how they overcome them. I had a prior knowledge of ballet myself, as I danced for eighteen years and she resided as the President of the Ballet Society during my study at Southampton

The qualitative research paper discussed the types of injuries ballet dancers commonly suffer from and how they overcome them. The article discusses where and who professional ballet dancers seek treatment from, and also the impact obtaining a foot injury within this industry can have on a ballerina’s career.

Whilst I still enjoy watching Ballet, my main role as a Podiatrist today is ensuring that the people I treat can lead the best life possible with whatever foot complaint they are experiencing, we spend much of our lives on our feet and I enjoy helping people to the best of my ability.

Podiatry is often carried out in a clinic but visits can also take place in the home, this post is about home visits.

What happens on a Home Visit?

A Podiatry appointment begins with an assessment interview, the following information is observed and recorded on your personal file: The presenting foot problem and medical history; consisting of medication you are currently taking and your health status.

The assessment interview is vital so that the best podiatry treatment and long term management plan can be drawn up.

The Podiatrist will then perform an observational and clinical examination. This is where the Podiatrist will look at your vascular and neurological status, your skin and nail condition, the type of footwear you are wearing may also be observed. A gait analysis may be needed depending on what the problem might be. (Merriman and Tollafield 1996)

Long Term Management Plan

Once these details are taken down, the Podiatrist will ask you to sign a consent form, to ensure you are happy to have your feet treated.

Occasionally, other conditions of the lower limb may be diagnosed and may need referral to another health professional, this can be arranged with your consent within a visit. The Podiatry treatment will then begin whether that be the cutting and/or the reduction of nails, the removal of callus and corns or the treatment of veruccae.. etc.

The podiatrist will then come up with a long term management plan to suit your individual needs, and will work out how often would be suitable to return for the next visit. We are happy to provide you with any foot health information you may require.

Who do Podiatrists’ treat on a Home Visit?

Most of the patients Podiatrists see on a home visit are those who are housebound, who cannot get out and about due to being elderly, due to illness or injury.

Podiatrist’s commonly visit nursing homes, hospitals, care and day centres and residential properties, to provide podiatry treatment for those who cannot or find it difficult to travel to visit a Podiatrist in a clinical setting.

Will a Home Visit take long?

healthy feet

Podiatry home visits generally last about thirty minutes, according to the treatment which is required. A first appointment may last a little longer due to paperwork requirements and the initial assessment.

For more complicated procedures more time should be allowed, but this can be arranged to suit the patient’s needs.

Is it more expensive than a Clinic Visit?

It may be slightly more expensive to have a home visit as the Podiatrist may need to cover traveling expenses and the time taken to travel between patients.
